An easy day rail journey via the spectacular Manawatu Gorge to Woodville.
Sunday 10 May 2020 (now Cancelled)
The train will be hauled by one of our coal fired steam locomotives and we will be using our fleet of classic red heritage carriages.
Passenger stops will be Paekakariki, Paraparaumu, Waikanae, Otaki, Levin, Shannon and Palmerston North.
Enroute to Woodville we will be making a special stop at Shannon for you to explore some of the special shops including Shannanigans, Shannon’s own shopping complex with 8 shops within, and just the round the corner a selection of new art, craft and gift shops. The Shannon Railway Station Museum and Visitor Centre Volunteers will be on hand to meet and greet with tea and coffee on hand.
While travelling through the Manawatu Gorge you will be able to view the large slips that have closed the highway on the opposite side of the river.
There will be a one hour stopover at Woodville while the loco is turned and serviced. You will be able to watch it running around a special “balloon loop” to turn. At Woodville there will be a range of food and craft stalls set up at the station showcasing local produce and crafts. Included will be the local Rotary group offering a range of hot snacks.
An easy way to inspect the gorge.
