Membership of Steam Incorporated is open to anyone who wishes to support the
activities of the Society. We have a variety of voluntary activities to suit
all people and you do not have to become physically involved at the site to
belong. Don’t let our name "Steam Incorporated" put you off, we
also have diesels and a huge variety of other tasks that you can help us out
with.
For those who wish to become physically active at the site, we can offer all
sorts of things, ranging from gardening, cleaning, looking after the train,
locomotives, buildings, right through to the more skilled tasks of
engineering. Not only do our members look after the site, train and
locomotives, but running a diverse society such as Steam Incorporated also
requires many varied administrative and business skills and we are always
looking for volunteers to help us with this sphere of things. The society also
welcomes people who just want to become financial supporters by paying the
annual subscription.
No
matter whether you are young or old, male or female, we have something to do
that will suit your interests or skills. Many good friendships have been
gleaned from the camaraderie at Steam Incorporated, why not give us a go? Our
main work day is on Saturday, but we even have a special work day on Thursdays
where, amongst others, a group of senior members gather to keep active and
enjoy the camaraderie. We are community spirited and have young and old, male
and female, skilled and unskilled people all working together at Steam
Incorporated.
Steam Incorporated also caters for younger people, who can choose from a number of projects to their liking. As well as helping us out, our teenage members are gleaning many different and valuable skills. You do not have to be skilled to help or just belong. We don’t have many restrictions, but for safety reasons we do ask that children under the age of 15 years old be accompanied by a parent or guardian whilst working at our site.
As a members you receive early notice of any rail excursions and have the benefit of members discounts, where offered. You will also received the Society’s quarterly magazine "Steamline", which keeps members up to date with Society happenings, and other news of interest to members.
Upon joining the Society, you are granted Associate Membership. Any member who plays an active role in Society activities and events can be offered Full Membership status at any time after at least one year’s membership. This will then give the member full voting rights at general meetings. Even though associate members are not entitled to vote, we always encourage them to come along to general meetings and have their say.
Want
to see where we are, we can easily be reached by suburban train services from
Wellington or Paraparaumu, or by road. Forty kilometres north of Wellington,
our site is located on State Highway 1, and is immediately north of the
Paekakariki railway station. We are open on Thursdays and Saturdays. You can
call in and have a look around at any other time by making prior arrangements.
